Ward 1 town and regional councillor candidates Obaro Akpomena Development Development in Oak- ville is necessary and inev- itable, but let's be smarter about it. Build the infra- structure and roads and know what capacity we have BEFORE more homes and condos. Con- dos within walking dis- tance of a GO station is a better idea since traffic is not getting better. Getting people to drive better and adhere to speed limits would be a priority. Tran- sit can have more efficient options that would reduce traffic congestion and pol- lution. For more information, visit www.voteobaro.ca. Numair Khan For residents: Gridlock For the town: Not the best town in Canada to do business in Gridlock: Improve transit. Increase dedicat- ed/separated bicycle aths. Incentivize car sharing/ pooling. Traffic engineer- ing to make us flow during rush hour. Attract businesses: At- tract "employable" 25- to 44-year-olds by approving housing they can afford. Effectively promote (in- vest time and effort and money) the benefits of working and living in Oak- ville, regionally, provin- cially, nationally and in- ternationally. For more information, visit www.votekhan.ca. Sean O'Meara (incumbent) Growth While the province has mandated growth throughout the GTHA, we must work through our re- gional allocation pro- grams to ensure that our infrastructure is in place before development oc- curs. I will also work to en- sure that the stable resi- dential neighbourhoods are protected as growth is directed to the six growth areas we have designated. I will work with our devel- opment partners to ensure complete communities are paramount, as develop- ment applications come forward. forward. f For more information, visit www.omeara.ca. WARD 2 TOWN COUNCILLOR CANDIDATES Gordon Zlatko Bobesich The most pressing issue affecting Oakville is park- ing, or the inadequacy of it. Lack of parking and vig- orous enforcement of parking drives consumers to the malls where there is free parking. More park-free parking. More park-f ing spaces have to be cre- ated. I have proposed a pilot project for free parking on Kerr Street. The system would involve obtaining a voucher from a merchant on Kerr Street to be placed on the windshield. The voucher would be validat- ed by a merchant. At Bronte, parking on private lots should be free after work hours, and tow- ing vehicles should be strictly forbidden. The town should pay, if necessary, a flat, reason- able fee for use of the park- ing lots after hours. Fraser Damoff Stopping the Glen Ab- bey Golf Course develop- ment is top of mind for me, Ward 2 residents and Oak- ville; but I truly believe that making our streets safer for all road users by lowering speed limits and building complete streets, as well as decreasing traf- fic congestion are all at thefic congestion are all at thef top of my priority list. Glen Abbey can be win- nable for Oakville. What we need are members of council who have the stomach to do what it takes to protect the course. Unlike some of the current council who made a closed-to-the-public deal on the Saw-Whet Golf Course development, I am firmly against any sort offirmly against any sort off settlement with ClubLink. We must also make our roads safer - reduce speed limits, build complete streets and implement ad- vanced walk signals at busy intersections. For more information, visit www.fraserdamoff- .com. Cathy Duddeck has been acclaimed as the Ward 2 Town and Regional Councillor. WARD 3 TOWN COUNCILLOR CANDIDATES Janet Haslett-Theall The biggest challenge Oakville faces is manag- ing intensification, which is mandated by the prov- ince. Intensification re- sults in many related is- sues: traffic congestion, road and neighbourhood safety, development chal- lenges, possible tree cano- py and green space loss, and storm-water manage- ment issues. Each of these are creating pressures that erode the liveability of our great community. Solutions: • Ensure the province and development pay their fair share for infrastruc-fair share for infrastruc-f ture • Improve arterial roads and flow, as well as storm-water management prior to further growth • Support Livable Oak- ville growth nodes only Midtown: • Adopt innovative de- sign principles that create a neighbourhood that is primarily ride-sharing, cycling and walk-to stores and services • Balance jobs with resi- dents for increased local opportunities and reduced congestion. • Update zoning to re- spect the character of the residential neighbour- hoods. • Find viable transit so- lutions that are conve- nient to encourage use. For more information, visit www.haslett- theall.ca. Nick Hutchins (incum- bent) To get the downtown through the next two years of construction, whilst keeping and ex- panding the retail stores. Mitigation strategy as per the town measures. • Advertising • BIA events, free store/ BIA giveaway promotions and town promotions • Extra entertainment • Free parking Sunday and Saturday, as well as having the first hour free via the Honk app • Extra parking else- where • Excellent way-finding signage For more information, visit www.nickhutchin- s.ca. Dave Gittings has been acclaimed as the Ward 3 Town and Regional Coun- cillor WARD 4 TOWN COUNCILLOR CANDIDATES Ishrani Henry Whether it is speeding, traffic congestion or sav- ing our precious green spaces and Glen Abbey Golf Course, the number one issue that I am hearing about in Ward 4 is that peo- ple want an accessible and responsive councillor. I live, work and play in Ward 4. I have lived here for 15 years, have raised afor 15 years, have raised af family here and built afamily here and built af business here. Your issues are my issues. What better voice can you have than someone who drives the same streets and whose kids go to the same schools as yours. And as a busi- ness person who knows how important it is to re- spond to customers and re- turn calls. For more information visit www.ishranihenry- .ca. Muneezah Jawad 90 per cent of the resi- dents I have met recently are most worried about traffic and congestion due to the rapid development in the area, which is mak- ing roads unsafe for driv- ers, pedestrians and cy- clists alike. There has been a noticeable increase in road accidents, near misses and road rage inci- dents over the last few years. Oakville's roadways need to be brought into the new millennium by better planning and providing state-of-the-art smart syn- chronized traffic systems that ease congestion.
