UNIT #3 GEORGETOWN Your Window & Door Professionals VISIT OUR SHOWROOM The Independent & Free Press has posed a question to municipal candidates. Here are the responses filed by the pub- lic and Catholic school board candidates in Halton Hills to: What do you consider the primary education issue in Halton Hills and how would you address it? The primary education issue is to ensure that the improvement goals identified in the Multi-Year Plan of the Halton District School Board are achieved by 2016. By re- alizing these goals, improvements will take place in student learning and achievement, student engage- ment in learning, graduation rates, and EQAO liter- acy and numeracy results. More students will report they feel safe and comfortable in their school and that it is an inclusive learning environment. Students will benefit from instruction, curriculum, and assess- ment tailored to meet their individual learning needs. Students will have easier access to computer technol- ogy to engage and support 21st Century learning. Through collaborative relationships inside the board and across the Halton Hills community, I will work to achieve these important improvement goals. My commitment is to promote resource allocation ensuring equity of opportunity, fiscal accountabil- ity, informed and transparent decision making, and timely community reporting of the Board's initiatives and achievements. I believe our biggest education issue is meeting the needs of all our stu- dents here in our Halton Hills community and at the same time preparing for the challenges of the growth that will occur in 2021. We need to continue to work on our math and literacy scores, ensuring our children are feeling safe and accepted at school and increasing the opportunities for physical activity for our students. As your trustee I will continue to advo- cate for the needs of all children and for the provision of appropriate programming in our home community. Life is complex for our kids and parents as well and know- ing that your child's needs are being met in their local schools is vital. We need to make school a safe, positive place for our students to learn, grow and mature and I will continue to advocate for our needs. Halton Catholic has con- sistently ranked among the top school boards in the province on standardized testing. We do not need to catch up; we need to work harder than ever to ensure our methods improve to help a larger and larger segment of our student population to be successful, to be able to plan their futures. To achieve this goal I am working to ensure that the students of Halton Hills have the best possible facilities and as many pathways to their future roles in society as we can afford. I want the best staff trained to inspire our children in a safe, challenging and faith-filled environ- ment. I want to continue the legacy that is Catholic education. I believe the government is trying to make one-size fits all policies for both the Catholic and public boards. I will address this by championing authentic Christ-centered Catholic educa- tion that embeds Gospel values throughout the curriculum and school activities. I feel this is being lost from my own experience as a student, as well as what I have been observing from afar since then. Fur- thermore, I work as a Civil Engineer on multi- million dollar construction projects, and I am a health and fitness coach as well. I am strong in my faith, financials and with people; leading and educating those around me through example and excellent communication. These are skills I will bring to the HCDSB as a Trustee for Halton Hills, with passion, integrity and transparency. Please Vote Skoko!
