CAUSE 4CANINES FUNDRAISER & ADOPTION EVENT HOSTED BY: SPONSORED BY:SPONSORED BY:SPONSORED BY: Jeff White, after 30 years in the restaurant business, went into teach- ing to share his knowledge with young people. And this he has done in the hos- pitality program - with an energy and enthusiasm which is rewarded by the success of his students. The Loyola Catholic Secondary School teacher was honoured Sept. 25 when he received the OTIP (Ontario Teachers Insur- ance Plan) Teaching Award in the beginning teacher category at the OTIP awards in Toronto. White combines his ex- perience in teaching with his acceptance of students for who they are, encourag- ing them to have confi- dence in their abilities. Those who might feel marginalized leave his class with a more positive self-image. One student comment- ed that White has taught them "to be respectful and to put my heart into every- thing that I do but most im- portantly ... that it's OK to act like yourself in front of others instead of putting on a mask." White's students experi- ence the real world of work- ing in and running a res- taurant. As the lead teach- er in culinary arts, he as- sembled five local restaurateurs who provide chefs, managers and oth- ers as mentors. His students opened a restaurant at Loyola that serves staff and students. White is currently working with an Indigenous chef to create native Canadian dishes to serve in the stu- dent restaurant to inte- grate Indigenous studies into the classroom in a meaningful way. To improve and expand his program, White regu- larly contacts other hospi- tality teachers and seeks feedback from students and parents. By providing a safe and practical learning environ- ment where students grad- uate with employable skills, White has placed more than 35 students with local jobs.
