41| O akville B eaver | T hursday,O ctober 11,2018 insidehalton.com 2000 when the region as- sumed responsibility for paramedic services. "It's an honour and privi- lege to have received this award along with all the other recipients," com- mented Gushev. "It was es- pecially rewarding to have received the medal from General (Richard) Rohmer, the most decorated Canadi- an war hero. Not only serv- ing the residents of Halton Region but in meeting some very interesting patients and learning their history. Also, I have had the privi- lege to work with some very talented and smart col- leagues along the way. "Even after 28 years of service, I still to this day say I'm privileged to be a para- medic, as I think this is one of the most rewarding ca- reers." Life as a paramedic is certainly interesting, said D'Etienne. "It is not the job I thought I would have pursued when I left high school. In secret I always wanted to be a po- lice officer, however, I end- ed up working at the Missis- sauga hospital as an emer- gency department orderly and a morgue attendant and suddenly I became pas- sionate about medicine. Be- ing a paramedic seemed like the next step in the road." D'Etienne said he has learned that the job is re- warding and at times tough. "You cannot take home what you see at work. You must learn to leave it there. On a personal note, I am from Cape Breton Island, from Cape Breton Island,f Nova Scotia and my family says that I 'have the gift of gab' (a local expression) which helps me greatly in my patient care as I can make patients feel less scared and more comfort- able." Since 1994 when the EMS Exemplary Service Medal was created by Governor General Romeo LeBlanc, there have been approxi- mately 2,000 recipients. Got plans for the weekend?
