Visitors that day said that from her hospital bed she continued to plan for an upcoming CCAH event scheduled for later this month, which she fully in- tended to be at, and had gone so far as to dictate three pages of notes con- cerning preparations. Tyrrell died following another heart attack on the evening of Oct. 7. Andrew talked about how proud he was of his mother for many reasons, but particularly for her work in raising awareness of black history in Oak- ville. "She really resurrected awareness of the impor- tance Oakville had played in the Underground Rail- road. There wasn't a light that was shining on that prior to her arrival," he said. "We're also proud of the programs she brought to Halton to raise awareness of black history, black cul- ture and the importance of all of us living harmoni- ously. That message over the years has been taken on by all the levels of gov- ernment- municipal, pro- vincial and federal." Oakville Mayor Rob Burton talked about Tyr- rell during the Tuesday, Oct. 9 meeting of Oakville council. He stated the town has tragically lost a larger than life figure. "She was a dear friend of mine and I feel a great tragic sense of loss person- ally and on behalf of the town," said Burton. "I hope the public will remember her and her family in their thoughts. It would be wonderful if ev- eryone could appreciate how much she did for our town with regard to the goals that we all share of reconciliation and inclu- siveness and co-operation and participation with each other in our commu- nity. The values and the life that she witnessed for I believe are so strong and so well done that they will live on after her." Burton said he would be delivering the eulogy at Tyrrell's service, which was slated for Oct. 13. Tyrrell is survived by her husband of 54 years Lloyd Tyrrell, her daugh- ter Allison, her son An- drew, his wife Ann Marie and their children Andrew Jr., and Brandon. Memorial donations can be made to the Oak- ville Hospital Foundation toward the CCAH room lo- cated in the Maternity Child Unit of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hos- pital.
