Family and genealogical research is becoming an in- creasingly popular hobby, likely because of the fascinat- ing stories, facts and anec- dotes about the past that can emerge with a bit of investiga- tive effort. The Oakville Public Li- brary has witnessed this spike in interest first-hand - the library's local Newspaper Database, which offers a rare and captivating glimpse into Oakville's past, was accessed over 18,842 times in the past three years, to date. As a result of the growing interest in these topics, OPL continues to add to its already impressive collection of gene- alogy-related programs and resources, such as online databases, genealogy "mee- tup" events and seminars on research tips and tricks. Cus- tomers are often pleasantly surprised to discover what the library provides, com- pletely free to OPL cardhold- ers, including subscription- based online databases like the wildly popular Ancestry- .ca. The library recently be- came an affiliate library with FamilySearch.org, another record-rich database. This al- lows customers to access re- stricted digitized microfilm, including 350-plus million im- ages they would otherwise not be able to access. This ac- cess point is exclusively avail- able in the Oakville Room at the Central branch. Although the library of- fers plenty of resources tofers plenty of resources tof conduct family history re- search on your own, OPL's highly knowledgeable and ex- perienced librarians are still the most valuable resource the library has to offer on the these topics. Elise C. Cole, lo- cal collections librarian at Oakville Public Library, pro- vides specialized expertise in the area of local and family history, and offers one-on-one assistance to people with spe- cific research questions relat- ed to their individual, family or collective community heri- tage. "People typically book ap- pointments with me when they've hit a brick wall in their own search," says Cole. "I love a good mystery and helping people complete the circle." Many of our genealogy-re- lated programs and services were made possible through generous donor support.
