ClubLink would make hundreds of millions of dollars in profit from this development, so it is desperate to get rid of the current mayor and councillors who are standing up to them in this important fight. As part of the two-year public consultation to create the Livable Oakville official plan, ClubLink said in writing they wanted Glen Abbey to continue as a public golf course and banquet facility. Now, they want to destroy our most important Cultural Heritage Landscape and break our official plan's urban structure by putting development there. Council rejected ClubLink's redevelopment application. ClubLink has appealed our decisions and an election will determine if we keep moving forward to win this case - or give up and collaborate with ClubLink as my opponent Julia Hanna has promised to do. I was elected with amandate to control growth for a change I was elected in November 2006 to direct development to only the places where it fit and to get the pace of growth under control. It was a big challenge because the ousted council had just rammed through approval of the growth you see in North Oakville. That council - led by Ann Mulvale - also adopted the short-sighted position that Glen Abbey Golf Course should be considered a redevelopment site. We threw out the Mulvale Plan to develop Glen Abbey along with the old official plan when the new green council and I took over on December 1, 2006. We began work on the new Livable Oakville official plan that was approved by the Province and put into effect in 2011 after unprecedented public consultation. We threw out the old plan to create an official plan that works. The old plan was so weak that we almost always lost to developers in court. Under the new Livable Oakville plan, we now win most of the time. And the pace of growth is at a 30-year low, less than half what it was when I became your mayor. This is the Glen Abbey election This is no time for beginners. My opponents did not show up to any of the meetings on Glen Abbey or Livable Oakville. Their comments reveal they do not understand the issues. This is no time to collaborate. Julia Hanna's vision is to collaborate to turn Glen Abbey into a public park. Without hundreds of millions of taxpayers' dollars to buy it, collaboration can only mean cutting a development deal with ClubLink. She is strengthening ClubLink's case and playing into their hands.Who do you think ClubLink wants to win the race for Mayor? This IS the time for strong and experienced leadership. Re-elect me and the green council to keep us moving forward, creating Canada's greenest and most livable town for all.
