A member of the Onta- rio alpine ski team, her races usually come down to tenths, if not hun- dredths, of a second. But even with those razor-thin margins, she'd never fin- ished a race and not known if she had won. But that was the case at Wednesday's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Con- ference cross-country championships. The King's Christian Colle- giate student chased down Bishop Reding's Hillary Bishop in the final 100 me- tres of the junior girls five- kilometer course, and they crossed the line side by side, posting identical times of 21 minutes and three seconds. "It really depends where the timer stopped," she said when asked if she'd pulled out the victory. Though they had to wait for the final results to be posted, Bishop suspected Eastwood had edged her at the finish. "I think she caught me," said Bishop, who had fin- ished 19 seconds ahead of Eastwood a week earlier on the same Hilton Falls Conservation Area course. "She was breathing down my neck the whole way, and I could hear her com- ing." Bishop led throughout most of the race, but as Eastwood emerged from the forest for the final time with about 400 me- tres left, she heard her coach yelling, "You can take this." Eastwood started to close in, but sensing the pressure, Bishop started to pull away again. "I started to doubt I could catch her, but then I saw the finish and gave it one last push, and all the people cheering really helped." Eastwood said running is good cardio training and helps build leg strength for skiing. And though it re- mains her primary sport, her coaches say she has shown more than just en- durance and the ability to run fast. "We're really impressed with how she strategizes during a race," said Amo- rel Adams.
