The Toronto Region Board of Trade (TRBT) re- leased results from an En- vironics Research survey done Aug. 13-21. The 10-minute question- naire polled 1,000 adult resi- dents in the Greater Toron- to Area (GTA), Hamilton and Waterloo regions with targeted samples for each GTA region. Eleven months ago, the TRBT released a concept paper called Superlinx: An Uploading Strategy for a Modern Provincial Transit Agency, which called for all Toronto region transit to be transformed into a single regional transit agency. The goal, according to the paper, is to get transit lines financed and built more quickly, offering com- muters a modern, seamless transit system, according to a media release. "We've spent 20 years urging the province to move growth revenues, fi- nancing capacity and planning authority down to cities to get transit built faster, and it hasn't worked," said Jan De Sil- va, TRBT president and CEO. "It's time to try to upload transit responsibility to the province instead, since that's where growth reve- nues, planning authority and financing capacity al- ready exist." Those who took the sur- vey were asked if they would support a single re- gional transit agency fund- ed by the provincial gov- ernment. The survey was con- ducted with an online panel and weighted for age and gender, and as a result there was no attributed margin of error, stated a media release. "The survey comes at a time when the (provincial government) is exploring options to upload Toronto's subway system as it prom- ised during the 2018 provin- cial election," the release stated. "The board sup- ports a subway upload as a first step because it shouldfirst step because it shouldf lead to other steps that will ensure a more regional model."
