Prosperous local econo- mies require visionary lead- ership, a friendly business climate and a spirit of col- laboration between busi- ness and local government. To that end, the OakvilleTo that end, the OakvilleT chamber looks forward to working with the newly elected council on behalf of our members on public pol- icies that will that will en- courage economic growth in our community. Chamber members made it clear during the campaign that they want to see town council focus on strengthening business competitiveness in Oak- ville. The top three issues on this matter that were raised during the campaign by chamber members were taxation, red tape and the cost of housing. Transportation infra- structure and congestion al- so remains a top priority for the Oakville business com- munity. In fact, in a recent advocacy survey 75 per cent of respondents stated that congestion on Oakville roads is a barrier to their business, citing that Oak- ville does not have the road infrastructure for the devel- opment it needs. Oakville's economic growth is an im- portant factor in the success of the Greater Toronto Ham- ilton Area. Ensuring its con- tinued success, as a genera- tor of jobs and prosperity, requires partnerships on vi- tal municipal infrastruc- ture. The Oakville chamber wants to work with our lo- cal representatives to urge the provincial and federal governments to engage municipalities, and the pri- vate sector on a long-term infrastructure investment strategy to increase pro- ductivity to enable compet- itiveness. We are fortunate thatWe are fortunate thatW Oakville is home to a hub for digital media and ani-for digital media and ani-f mation and a world class educational institution, Sheridan College. In addi- tion to the existing ad- vanced manufacturing and professional services sectors, there is an oppor- tunity for a life sciences district in our own back- yard. But with these opportu- nities, the business commu- nity underscores that re- cruiting and retaining tal- ent is a challenge for their business. Consequently, now more than ever the chamber en- courages council to create a plan that leverages the tal- ent and opportunity that ex- ists in Oakville in order to compete in a global econo- my. Finally, innovation is key to our communities' success. Oakville has the opportunity to develop a plan on innovation that in- cludes partnering with the business and tech commu- nity and to pilot projects that drive smart city initia- tives. As part of the Oakville chamber's continuing advo- cacy efforts we are excited about the prospect of work- ing closely with our newly elected council to support Oakville businesses, reduce costs and allow for econom- ic growth.
