On Dec. 4, the province said it was streamlining pro- cesses to sell buildings and properties that are no longer needed to deliver govern- ment programs. This action is expected to accelerate 243 surplus prop- erty sales, which include some locations in Oakville. Proponents of the plan say this will generate reve- nue and reduce costs the government must pay to maintain these properties. "Ontario currently has hundreds of vacant surplus properties across the prov- ince, costing the govern- ment millions of tax dollars a year to maintain," said Bill Walker, minister of govern-Walker, minister of govern-W ment and consumer servic- es, in a press release. "Our plan is about work- ing harder, smarter and more efficiently so we can reduce costs, generate much needed revenue and make life better for the people of Ontario." Minister of Municipal Af- fairs and Housing Stevefairs and Housing Stevef Clark said the new process would also help the province identify suitable properties for affordable housing andfor affordable housing andf long-term care projects. He said each property would be evaluated prior to sale, to determine if they could be used for either of these purposes. The process efficiencies listed include: • Reducing circulation time to external third par- ties • Expediting the sale and reuse of heritage properties, while ensuring effective pro- tective mechanisms are in place • Introducing a regulato- ry amendment to exempt re- alty transactions for disposi- tion and severance from En- vironmental Assessment Act requirements. The prov- ince argues this will allow efforts and resources to be focused on projects thatfocused on projects thatf have greater potential to im- pact the environment. It said the future owner of the prop- erty would still need to meet environmental obligations related to the proposed fu- ture use of the property. These changes are expec- ted to save an estimated 150 days of administrative time for these realty sales.for these realty sales.f The Ontario government is hopeful these realty sales will generate roughly $105 to $135 million in net revenue for the government overfor the government overf four years.four years.f The provincial surplus lands, which are now listed for sale on the open market, for sale on the open market,f include a 43-acre site in the Burnhamthorpe Road and Highway 403 area in Oak- ville, which is being offered at a price of more than $14.6 million.
