They would have been amazed that the company would some day have something called an app that customers access with mobile phones. As the home-grown Oakville business approaches its 20th anniversary in 2020, the company is striving to update services based on its successful two-decades in business and to continue to better serve Oakville residents. "We now have a fully automated dispatch system and integrated GPS systems in all of our cars," mentioned General Man- ager Miroslav El-Bassyouny. "We've also launched our new app to make our services more easily accessible." The new app, available for download from iTunes or Google Play, allows customers to order a cab straight from the app, see the estimated fee for the ride and see where other taxis are on the road. Customers will receive an offer for a special discount of 20 per cent off for taxis ordered directly through the app. With the rise of other driving services in- cluding Uber and Lyft, the discount from the app helps Oakville United Taxi maintain its prices at a competitive price point with oth- er services, the general manager explains. Oakville United Taxi was founded when a group of about 20 drivers from another Oakville service came together to start their own taxi company in hopes of providing sta- ble work for themselves and other drivers. The company name reflects how the drivers united to form their own taxi service. Over the years the number of drivers has grown to approximately 90 today. The Oakville based company has main- tained the same goals through the years of putting the community first and giving back in anyway they can. "About 85 per cent of our drivers live in Oakville," explained El-Bassyouny, who joined the company as general manager in 2001. "We work in Oakville, our office is in Oakville and we truly are Oakvillians. We enjoy participating in our community in any way we can. In the past, we've sponsored the Oakville Soccer Club, do- nated money to the new Oakville Hospital and we volunteer every year at the Santa Claus parade." In addition to the volunteering and fi- nancial support with the community in mind, the company has supported Oakville by equipping its office and cars with products and services from other lo- cal businesses, including I.T., business cards, stationary and other items. El-Bassyouny also noted that Oakville United Taxi doesn't charge a surcharge and they pick up regardless of the weath- er or high-demand. To ensure the safety and ease for cus- tomers, all drivers have CPR Training, po- lice clearance and many drivers have a TDG Certificate, allowing them to trans- port dangerous goods.
