Today, global perspectives and under-as a school. Today, global perspectives and underas a school. Today, global perspectives and under standing are strongly embedded elements of the Appleby experience as students are required to participate in a global learning experience as part of the Appleby College diploma. "The decision to make a global learning experi- ence a core requirement of the Appleby diploma re- ally speaks to what we believe in as a school," said Rob McGuiness, assistant head of school, global education and director of intercultural and experi- ential programmes. "By fully connecting immersive global learning experiences with the curriculum we are helping students become more self-aware with a heightened understanding of the world around them, and to develop skills to collaborate across cultures as they prepare to be leaders within this globalized world." Students have a variety of options to choose from in meeting the diploma requirement, including international service, intercultural, expedition/trek, field studies, or language immersion programmes, as well as exchanges and Round Square Interna- tional conferences. "My global experiences have brought me a love for travel and have taught me so many amazing lessons that I would never have received in the classroom," said grade 12 student Corissa Larson. "These experiences have taught me what it means to be a global citizen and have inspired me to be- come actively engaged in any way that I can to help make the world a better place." Appleby's commitment to global learning is not new. Building on its strengths of experiential edu- cation, including outdoor education and boarding, the school has a long tradition of nurturing global awareness and understanding. In 1992 Appleby became a member of Round Square - a world- wide association of more than 180 schools whose students share a strong commitment to academic excellence, personal development and responsibil- ity. Appleby's commitment to global citizenship was further enhanced in 2005 with the introduction of its own International Service Learning and Intercul- tural programmes. Today, more than 230 students and faculty annually participate in service learning projects, community partnerships and immersive intercultural learning throughout the globe includ- ing diverse national perspectives such as visiting the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in Nelson House, Manitoba to develop a better understanding and awareness of issues facing Indigenous Canadians. In 2011 Appleby launched the Appleby College Diploma with Distinction in Global Leadership, the first truly integrated global education programme offered by a North American boarding school.
