The 14-year-old Oakville resident has successfully managed a busy Grade 9 schedule, while designing and launching his own clothing line, Untitled Ap- parel. The brand currently in- cludes T-shirts and hoodies in adult sizes with the word Untitled written forwards and backwards, across the front.front.f "Untitled is simply de- fined as without a title. Ti-fined as without a title. Ti-f tles are predetermined def- initions of what someone or something is," said Cha- man Mallqui, who moved to Oakville from Lima, Pe- ru in 2007. "When you place a title on something or someone, you don't have the opportu- nity to define it for yourself. People should be able to de- fine themselves by their ac-fine themselves by their ac-f tions. From that, I brought our slogan, Define Your- self." Chaman Mallqui's in- terest in fashion was influ- enced by his mother, who always dressed her boys in trendy clothing, and his sense of business he inher- ited from his father, he said. "Since I was young, I have seen my dad working hard every day. From my father's hard work, I hadfather's hard work, I hadf the privilege to wear the clothes I want, go out with friends and play sports.friends and play sports.f Seeing what hard work and providing financial free- dom can produce, I thought to myself, why shouldn't I start young and have a head start teaching myself and preparing for the fu- ture." His first release of Unti- tled Apparel, launched last October, sold out. He re- stocked his casual line again in November and is expecting another ship- ment this month. "I'm working on several other designs and deciding on what to release next. There will be many designs in the future." His family is his stron- gest supporter. "My biggest mentor in the forming of my brand would be my father (Luis Chaman). He taught me to take risks, to be my own person, to try my hardest whether I succeed or not. My biggest supporter is and will always be my mother (Mila Mallqui)." Two other mentors in the young teen's life are his older brother, Gonzalo So- to, who taught him to al- ways believe in himself, and Dylan Reid, another entrepreneur who taught him that you are never too young to start making your own money. As he plans his future- , Chaman Mallqui is not short of the confidence it will no doubt take to achieve his goals. "I want to have a life where I can do all the things I love constantly and there is no better way to do that than to be your own boss. I've always had a com- petitive nature, jealous for those who are successful but in a way that it makes me strive harder to become better than them. I want to build something by myself whether it's clothing or an- other business; I want to be at the top of the pyramid." YOUNG OAKVILLE ENTREPRENEUR ENJOYS BEING HIS OWN BOSS Oakville's Marcelo Chaman Mallqui,14, has launched his own clothing brand of T-shirts and hoodies called 'Untitled Apparel'. Graham Paine/Metroland KATHY YANCHUS kyanchus@metroland.com NEWS The treasurer of the Halton Catholic District School Board, Roxana Ne- goi, is moving to the public school board in February. Negoi's resignation from her role as superintendent of business and treasurer was accepted by Catholic trustees on Jan. 15. On Jan. 16, the Halton District School Board announced she'd been hired as the su- perintendent of business services, starting Feb. 19. "Negoi will lead the business functions of fi- nancial services (including treasury and risk manage- ment), planning, purchas- ing and procurement, and transportation," states a release from the public board. The role is very sim- ilar to her current position with the Catholic board, but with a larger organiza- tion and budget to manage. She replaces Lucy Veer- man, whose retirement was announced last fall. A central figure among the senior staff of the Cath- olic board, Negoi was often called upon to guide trust- ees through budgetary matters. She held the su- perintendent role with the Catholic board since 2016, after a promotion from her job as senior manager of fi- nancial services. Catholic board director of education Pat Daly said the board was sorry to lose Negoi, but wishes her the best. "Roxana Negoi's leader- ship and experience have brought consistency and stability to our business operations for the past sev- eral years," he said Jan. 17. "While her departure is an obvious loss to our system, it also speaks to Roxana's skills and talents." Negoi's previous em- ployers include the Water- loo Region District School Board and Ernst and Young. "I know I speak for the trustees and members of the senior leadership team in welcoming Roxana to the Halton District School Board," stated Stuart Miller, Director of Educa- tion for the Halton District School Board, in the re- lease. "Roxana's leader- ship, career experience and commitment to educa- tion will be an invaluable addition to our senior ad- ministrative team." Negoi says she's looking forward to starting the next phase of her career with the Halton District School Board."While I am excited about this opportu- nity, I am sad to be leav- ing... I have really valued being a part of such a vi- brant and caring learning community and I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish during my time at this board. The board has a strong busi- ness team in place and will continue to thrive."This story was updated on Jan. 17 to include comment from Pat Daly, and on Jan. 22 to include comment from Roxana Negoi.
