In a press release issued by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing on Wednesday, March 13, the province said it would hold an online consulta- tion that would be open to all peo- ple who live or work in the areas included in the review. The review will examine On- tario's eight regional municipali- ties (Halton, York, Durham, Wa- terloo, Niagara, Peel, Muskoka District and Oxford County), the County of Simcoe, and their low- er-tier municipalities. The deadline to submit com- ments for the online consultation is April 23, 2019. "We promised the people of Ontario that all levels of govern- ment would work harder, smar- ter and more efficiently," said Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark in the press release. "Our government is putting people first by seeking local input on how to improve governance, decision-making and service de- livery for regional governments and their member municipali- ties." In addition to meeting with municipalities and stakeholder groups, Special Advisers Michael Fenn and Ken Seiling will assess the feedback received through the online consultation. They are expected to provide their advice and recommenda- tions to Clark this summer. "I look forward to receiving the recommendations and hear- ing what is working in the re- gions and Simcoe County, and what can be improved," said Clark. The special advisers will work with the province to explore: • Opportunities to make it eas- ier for residents and businesses to access municipal services; • Processes to deliver efficient and effective local services that respects taxpayers' money; • Methods to make municipal- ities open for business; and • Possibilities to cut red tape and duplication, and save costs. Local residents and business- es will be consulted in spring 2019. Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward said the City of Bur- lington is always happy to look for efficiencies within the gov- ernment but noted amalgamat- ing Halton's municipalities into a City of Halton is a non-starter. "Burlington is already an effi- cient council: the smallest of Hal- ton Region at seven members, and the smallest of any Ontario municipality of our size," she said. "The Region is also efficient and effective; we enjoy being the safest region in Canada, a Triple A credit rating, high satisfaction on our services, and tax increases at or below the rate of inflation, with a number of years of no in- creases. Similar to the one passed at Regional Council, Burlington Council passed a resolution- unanimously-to protect Burling- ton's identity and two-tiered mu- nicipal government system. With council being unanimous once again in its stance and passing of this resolution, it sends a strong message as to where Burlington is on this matter."
