Snow geese are uncommon here in the winter, says Droniuk. The blue snow goose with its dark feathers is even more uncommon than the largely white colouration of most snow geese. It will hang out with Canada geese and mute swans but will eventually head north to the arctic for the summer breeding season. Randy Droniuk photo ANIMAL TALESLETTERS TO THE EDITOR SENIOR THRILLED WITH ASSISTANCE FROM SIDEWALK SNOW PLOWER In our world of constant bad news and and anxiety I experienced a lovely act of kindness on my street last week. I was shoveling a huge windrow of snow from the end of my driveway, feeling totally intimidated by the gi- gantic amount I had yet to go. I am a senior and my husband is barred from shoveling because of a heart condition. We are blessed with wonderful neighbours who always help me, but of course, ev- ery one was at work on this weekday. The little sidewalk plow was clearing snow at the corner, and did not need to plow our sidewalks because they had been already cleared by the home- owners. So imagine my sur- prise when the little plow roared up the middle of my street and right through the mountain of snow I was working on! Two pushes and he was on his way. As I waved and mouthed thank you, he waved back with a smile. What a beautiful act of kindness to an old lady! Maybe I reminded him of his grandma? Blessings up- on him. VERA SPOTTON, OAKVILLE AMALGAMATION A 'MIND- BOGGLINGLY STUPID IDEA' Dear Stephen Crawford: I'm just writing to say I sure as heck hope you strongly oppose this mind- bogglingly stupid idea of de- stroying our towns and our culture with this dictatorial legislative overreach to "amalgamate" the whole re- gion into one pointless ho- mogenized mess of a mass. There is NO reason to do this. Our culture and our town and our governance worked just fine before you and Doug Ford came along. If you want to have a job going forward, you need to stand up, and I mean now, to stop this. It's not OK or enough to just meekly mumble that you don't favour this inva- sion of our lives and proper- ty, or that you plan to wait for the "review." If you represent the peo- ple of Oakville, you need to represent the people of Oakville. And as you know, NO ONE supports this idea. You did not run on this as a platform, and we are not go- ing to stand by and let you and Doug Ford destroy our way of life that we have been building beautifully - and paying taxes to build - for decades. People are steamed. And this is not going to stand. So you better stand with us. Or you're standing against us.
