A recent trend with the warmer weather coming is seeing Halton regional po- lice officers on bike patrol nabbing distracted drivers. It has happened several times over the past few days. The most recent inci- dent occurred Monday, April 8 near the Longo's on Dundas Street as a police officer on bike patrol pulled over the Mercedes driver. Halton police say the driver had a suspended li- cence and as a result, the luxury vehicle will be im- pounded for 45 days. This #DistractedDriver was caught by Cst. Spring- stead from Platoon 4 @HRPSOak on #BikePa- trol. The driver was a 'Vehi- cle Impoundment Pro- gram' eligible suspended driver and as such the vehi- cle is subject to a 45 Day Im- pound. #EndDistracted- Driving ^MRT pic.twit- ter.com/6v5VwjL6VE- HRPS Oakville (@HRPSOak) April 9, 2019Also on April 8, Halton police pulled a driver over who had a "baby in the back seat" at Trafalgar Road and Dundas Street, according to Const. Marc Taraso. "We were watching from a driveway on Dundas Street, observed them go by; driver had his head down and hand off the wheel, activity consistent with distracted driving," Taraso said. "Approached them on my bike once stopped at the red light of Trafalgar and Dundas, and the driver (the male) had his phone in hand texting. As I approached the car I suddenly heard clapping; look around to see occu- pants of nearby cars clap- ping and one yelled 'he was on his phone, get him.'" Both drivers were charged with distracted driving, a charge which carries a $615 fine, three de- merit points and a three- day driver's licence sus- pension.
