When he got a one-game call- up to the Oakville Blades in De- cember, he set up a goal. When he went to the Canada Games in Feb- ruary, he picked up six assists in six games as he helped Ontario claim a silver medal. But going into his OHL draft year, Bloom was the recipient of an assist. His cousin, Ethan Szyp- ula, was just wrapping up his own five-year career with the Owenfive-year career with the Owenf Sound Attack and offered Bloom a little guidance. "He told me it's my last year of minor hockey, enjoy the mo- ment," Bloom said. "He told me to not let the pressure get to me." It's sound advice, except that Bloom likes it when the heat is turned up a little. "I love the pressure. I like be- ing the guy with the puck on my stick in the last seconds," he says. "I pride myself in coming through in the big games." And he's done it before. Four years ago, when Richmond Hill scored a late goal to send the OM- HA final to overtime, it was Bloom's goal that clinched the mi- nor peewee title for the Oakville Rangers. At the OHL combine, with scouts from every team watching and players squeezing their sticks a little tighter, it was Bloom who turned in the highest scores among the forwards in the on-ice skill assessments. He didn't fare too badly in the off-ice fitness as- sessments either, finishing fourth. fourth. f "He has done a good job rising to the occasion and playing very well in big games," Dave Wil- liams, his assistant coach with the Toronto Nationals, said in OHL prospect profile. "He cer- tainly makes his teammates around him better." All of that factored into the Saginaw Spirit picking Bloom in the second round, 30th overall, in the OHL draft. He was the first forward and one of just three se-forward and one of just three se-f lected by Saginaw in its first 10 picks, and one of those has com- mitted to the NCAA. While that will help his chanc- es, Bloom didn't work this hard to start taking things for granted now. "I still have to get the job done," he said. "I have to go into camp and put my best foot forward." Bloom was the first of six Oak- ville players selected in two OHL drafts conducted this week. The second to go was Oakville Rang- ers defenceman James Jodoin. The six-foot-one blueliner was chosen in the fourth round by the Windsor Spitfires. Like Bloom, Jodoin made a strong impression at the OHL combine with the highest grade among blueliners in the on-ice skills. Goalie Matteo Drobac was tak- en in the sixth round by the Ham- ilton Bulldogs after helping the Halton Hurricanes reach the OM- HA final. "His overall positioning and focus is very good," said Hurri-focus is very good," said Hurri-f canes coach Rick Chisholm. "He needs to get a little better on his rebound control, but his angles and his recovery are very good." Hamilton went back to Oak- ville for its seventh-round pick, selecting Rangers' defenceman Owen Wilson. The six-foot-three blueliner had 15 points in 32 games for Oakville this season. Six picks later, Bloom's Na- tionals teammate Declan Ride was taken by the Guelph Storm. Ride contributed to Oakville's domination of the combine with the best performance in the off- ice testing among defencemen. Four days later, the OHL held its under-18 draft where goalie Curtis Boothe, who played with the Markham Majors, was taken sixth overall by the Sarnia Sting.
