Oakville Place Mall may soon be home to a new pet hotel. The pet supply retail gi- ant PetSmart is calling for zoning changes to permit a 3,073-square-foot facility dedicated to pet training, pet daycare and pet board- ing (overnight) on the sec- ond floor of the former Sears unit at the mall locat- ed on Trafalgar Road and the QEW. This establishment would also feature a retail pet supply store and offer pet grooming services. The proposal was dis- cussed during the town's planning and development council meeting on Mon- day, April 15. During that meeting, PetSmart representative Oz Kemal said the pro- posed pet hotel would have up to 73 dog rooms and eight "kitty cottages." He noted there would al- so be two large playrooms, one capable of holding 34 pets and the other capable of holding 24 pets. He said PetSmart cur- rently has 220 overnight and day camp facilities, nine of which are in Cana- da. "From a planning per- spective at the provincial level, the Growth Plan wishes to support achieve- ments of complete commu- nities that support people's daily needs," said Kemal. "The pet hotel would contribute to a complete community as it would pro- vide a service not currently offered for the public and it utilizes existing infrastruc- ture in a central location." Town staff and mem- bers of council had several concerns about the pro- posed facility. Kate Cockburn of the town's planning services department said the town has a licensing bylaw in place that requires this sort of business to provide an outdoor area the dogs can be taken to. The bylaw also lists in- tervals for when the dogs must be taken outside. "This proposal has in- door amenity space only, no outdoor space," said Cockburn. She said the town re- ceived a letter from a mem- ber of the public who called on the town to ensure any dogs boarded at this facili- ty have access to green space.
