Al- though most Canadian youth are involved in orga- nized sports, many teens aren't active outside of these regularly scheduled activi- ties. Kids must learn to move, just like they learn to read and write. These skills - called physical literacy skills - help young people gain confidence and con- tribute to healthy life hab- its. This is why the Oakville Public Library (OPL) and the Town of Oakville have teamed up to give youth ac- cess and opportunities to build physical literacy and engage in daily activity. Last year, we introduced the Sports Equipment Lending Program, which made cricket, tennis and multi-sport kits available to borrow from several library branches with eligible OPL cards. This program is a contin- ued success, giving families opportunities to explore and play with new equip- ment and try out sports they would have never had access to, otherwise. The ul- timate goal is to inspire movement, curiosity and fun through sports andfun through sports andf play. This summer, we are continuing to celebrate play and encourage physical lit- eracy by hosting Meet, Move, and Learn events. These light exercise ses- sions will be held at local parks throughout the com- munity, featuring the Sports Equipment Lending Kits and a sports game, led by town staff. Library staff will also be on-hand to an- swer questions about bor- rowing the kits. We all have a role to playWe all have a role to playW in keeping children and youth in our community ac- tive and engaged in physical literacy, and the town and OPL are stepping up to offer these valuable services. More details about the Meet, Move, and Learn se- ries or the Sports Equip- ment Lending Program can be found at your local OPL branch, community centre or at oakville.ca.
