At just 16, the Oakville teen has found remarkable success with a camera. St. Thomas Aquinas high school sent him to the Halton Skills competition recently, and he won first place in secondary school photography for both the public and catholic school boards. That led him to the provincials in May. The Skills Ontario event at the Toronto Congress Centre saw 2,400 elementary, high school and college students from across the province competing in car- pentry, construction, computers, electrical, welding, hairstyling, culinary, graphic design, robot- ics, mechanics and photography. The main photography judge at the event said he was so im- pressed with Kukolic's skills he invited him to his office for a day of free training. Although most of his compet- itors were in Grade 12, he earned a bronze medal, taking third place in the province, as a Grade 10 student. He also received a $1,000 scholarship to Humber Col- lege should he choose to go there after earning his high school di- ploma. "The Skills Ontario competi- tion was a fantastic event which brought many amazing photog- raphers from around the prov- ince to one location," Kukolic said. "It was such an honour to be able to attend as a Grade 10 stu- dent and see all the talent out there. I feel that photography is a true art that can really move peo- ple. I love working in that field now, and I hope to find many op- portunities to build photography into my life as I get older." He taught himself how to use a camera by watching videos on YouTube, when he was 14. YouTube, when he was 14. "I quickly outgrew the first camera," he laughed, adding he's always been into tech and com- puters but was "bad at drawing." "I feel that photography is a good medium between the two, and you're creating your own art," he said. He enjoys landscapes, for the most part, and said the sunrise is his favourite time, with beautiful colours to capture. He also enjoys portraits and takes a lot of photos of fellow stu- dents and many others. "You get to be very creative with those," he said. He is shooting his second wed- ding in July in Parry Sound. He has com- peted at the World Irish Dance Championships five times, earn- ing his personal best last month in Greensboro, N.C., when he fin- ished 23rd in the world, in 16-year- old boys. He enjoys mixing dance with photography. "Travelling with dance has been great. I've been to Dublin, Glasgow and many other places. I'll be heading to Vancouver for the nationals this summer. Any trip I can get my hands on is a good photo op." To learn more, go to jackku- kolic.com.
