"The Halton Regional Police Service recognizes that addressing the devas- tating impacts of the opioid crisis requires a holistic, long-term, col- laborative approach. We are leveraging all internal resources and taking all measures to actively in- vestigate and prosecute those responsible for traf- ficking in illicit narcot-ficking in illicit narcot-f ics," said Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner. "In parallel, we contin- ue to work with strategic partners to further our understanding of the up- stream factors that con- tribute to this issue. Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Halton Region Medical Of- ficer of Health, said 40 peo-ficer of Health, said 40 peo-f ple in Halton died from opioid overdoses in 2018. She said each of these deaths matters greatly and is preventable. "We want to talk about opioid overdoses- to re- duce the stigma against people who use drugs, and to ensure that people who use drugs get the support they need," she said. "We are already work- ing to ensure that people who use drugs, their fami- lies and friends, can ac- cess free naloxone through our clinic and outreach programs, and to equip first responders in Halton to carry nalox- one, which saves lives. This is a complex issue that requires a communi- tywide response." The Halton Region is encouraging all parents to have open and frank con- versations with their chil- dren about the dangers of street drugs, and in par- ticular opioids.
