We all want to ensure Canada remains strong and competitive in this fast-changing world. We want to see our economy grow and we want more jobs for Canadians. Every day, the business- es that drive our economy are making hard decisions about how to preserve jobs or create new ones, wheth- er to invest here or abroad and how to respond to com- petition that grows more intense by the day. The de- cisions they make deter- mine the future of our com- munities and our country. That is why the Oakville chamber will be communi- cating these priorities to all the federal candidates leading up to the October election. Our focus is on a small number of big issues that are crippling the abil- ity of Canadian businesses to compete, grow, and inno- vate. While our economy fac- es many headwinds that are out of our control, there is much we can, and should, do. Some of the solutions outlined by the Canadian chamber include: A regula- tory system that works for everyone, including busi- ness; A tax system that is fair, efficient and modern; Greater access to new mar- kets around the world, and the breaking down of do- mestic trade barriers; Helping small and medium enterprises in a way that's meaningful to them so that they can grow and succeed Without a thriving busi- ness sector, Canada's eco- nomic growth suffers, our prosperity declines, and our governments can't af- ford roads, hospitals, and schools and provide social services. When business succeeds, Canada suc- ceeds. Our businesses need the next government to be a forward-looking partner that helps them build a stronger and more innova- tive Canada for all. On behalf of the busi- ness community, the Oak- ville chamber will be en- gaging candidates from all political parties, in a con- versation around these business priorities. Faye Lyons is vice-presi- dent of government rela- tions and advocacy at the Oakville Chamber of Com- merce. at home and abroad; Help- ing Canada seize the power of the digital age, while also investing in more tradi- tional trade-enabling in- frastructure; Helping grow a 21st-century workforce with the skills, education and training required to prosper; and An affordable approach to filling the gaps in pharmacare without dis- rupting today's employ- ment provided plans. The platform was developed in partnership with Canada's provincial and territorial chambers of commerce. The entire network of 450 chambers of commerce, in- cluding the Oakville cham- ber, will be working togeth- er throughout the election period to keep our nation's political leaders focused on taking bold steps to protect and strengthen Canada's competitive position.
