CORRECTION A construction compa- ny has been fined $60,000 in connection with inju- ries received by a worker at an Oakville construction site. Ontario's Ministry of Labour said the incident took place on Feb. 21, 2018 at a townhouse project, which was being undertak- en by MC Oakvillage GP Inc. (MCO), near the inter- section of Dundas Street East and Trafalgar Road. The worker was stand- ing on a ladder on a sec- ond-floor balcony, approx- imately 11-feet above the ground when they fell and were injured. A Ministry of Labour in- vestigation revealed there was a single wooden 2x4 in- stalled horizontally at the open edge of the balcony, at a height of approximately four feet from the balconyfour feet from the balconyf floor.floor.f The worker had grabbed this 2x4 as they descended the ladder, at which point the 2x4 gave way and the worker fell. The ministry said the 2x4 was not nailed down or otherwise securely fas- tened in place. The guardrails on the balcony were installed with a "compression fit" approach, using a 2x4 wedged between two brick posts; this was done to avoid damaging the brickavoid damaging the bricka columns. There was no engineer- ing for the design of the rails to assess what load they could support. There was no other guardrail in place to pro- tect workers from falling. The Ministry said MCO violated the Occupational Health and Safety Act by not having an adequate guardrail system in place. MCO pleaded guilty in Burlington provincial court and was fined $60,000 on July 3, 2019. NEWS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY FINED DAVID LEA dlea@metroland.com
