Oakville council voted unanimously to pass the declaration during its Monday, June 24 meeting. In doing so the town joins 609 councils (includ- ing Burlington and Halton Hills) in 13 countries, which have made similar declarations. The Canadian govern- ment passed a motion to de- clare a national climate emergency in Canada on June 17. Town staff said the pur- pose of the climate emer- gency campaign is to quickly make the climate crisis a priority in a gov- ernment's strategic vision and plans for a community. They said an emergency response is meant to build awareness and capacity for the local government and its community members to initiate critical and accel- erated action toward cli- mate change. The move follows a push by Grade 11 Abbey Park High School student An- drei Adam, who launched an online petition on May 8 calling on the town to de- clare a climate change emergency. Adam spoke during Monday's council meeting noting the petition has so far gathered around 1,600 signatures. "Around the world sci- entists are telling us our carbon emissions are mak- ing the planet uninhabit- able. The United Nations is telling us it is an existential threat and economists are telling us it risks uprooting all our financial systems," said Adam. "If this is not an emer- gency, what is?" Adam went on to say Oakville has an obligation to do more to reduce its car- bon footprint arguing it needs to adopt the more ag- gressive greenhouse gas emission reduction tar- gets, set by the United Na- tions Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, of a 45 per cent reduction by 2030 and carbon neutral- ity by 2050. Some measures Adam proposed included the re- evaluation of the town's cli- mate strategy, expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the ban- ning of single-use plastics by 2025, smarter develop- ment of new neighbour- hoods, promoting green roofs and turning empty plots into green space. Council heard from eight additional delega- tions, including represen- tatives of the Oakville- green Conservation Asso- ciation, Sheridan College and the Halton Environ- mental Network (HEN). All speakers called on council to declare a climate change emergency.
