Young children, say po- lice, should wear proper flo- tation devices at all times when near pools or other recreational bodies of wa- ter, and to further ensure that adults "of vulnerable stature" are capable of su- pervising young children in such environments. According to Halton Re- gion Health Department da- ta from 2013-2015, there was an average of two deaths per year due to uninten- tional drowning in Halton. No data is available for local drownings in 2019 and 2018; however, the region points out that from 2015-2017 there were 27 emergency department visits and four hospitalizations per year due to drowning and near- drowning in Halton. The data showed that during the 2015-2017 period in Halton, 43 per cent of emergency department vis- its for drowning and near- drowning involved boats and other watercrafts. Halton police are con- tinuing to advise boaters of the importance of checking weather forecasts before leaving the dock, ensuring that every person in the boat is wearing a life-jacket and never operating a boat while impaired. Many other drownings and near-drown- ings - 29 per cent - involved pools, while nine per cent in- volved natural bodies of wa- ter where no boats were in- volved. Halton's most recent tragedy occurred at a resi- dence on Yarmouth Cres- cent on July 10. Police said a grandmoth- er and her four-year-old grandchild were playing in the pool together. The girl's mother went inside to prepare lunch, and returned less than 10 min- utes later to find both her loved ones face down in the pool. A neighbour pulled the grandmother out of the pool, while the mother pulled out the child. At some point, 911 was called. Officers immediately per- formed CPR upon arriving on scene, where the 79-year- old woman was declared dead. The child regained con- sciousness prior to police arrival. She was taken to McMaster Children's Hos- pital, where she was initial- ly listed as being in critical condition. Her condition was upgraded to stable on July 11. Police said an autopsy was likely to be carried out July 11 on the grandmother to determine whether she experienced some kind of medical episode. Officers emphasized that there are no suspicious circumstanc- es surrounding this tragic incident at this time.
