"It's not right of way on a motorcycle - it's right of weight," Snow said. "If you get hit on a motorcycle, the likelihood is you're going to come out on the losing end of it." Though a number of col- lisions have been caused by a driver turning into a mo- torcyclist's path, Snow not- ed, the rider may have been moving too fast. "When you slow down you increase your reaction time and increase the amount of time to brake or otherwise avoid a colli- sion," Snow said. While there are inher- ent risks involved with tak- ing to two wheels instead of four, Snow said, there were a lot of things motorcy- clists could do to mitigate those risks. Rob Copeland, chief in- structor at the Motorcycle Training Organization of Halton/Peel (MTOhp), said there are things both driv- ers and riders can do to keep the roads safe for all. "It seems that drivers don't give motorcyclists the same respect they'd give a car," Copeland said. "May- be they crowd them or pull out in front, when they wouldn't in front of a car." Distance can be tough to judge when it comes to mo- torcycles, he said. Copeland also said mo- torcyclists are able to stop faster than other vehicles. "If you're tailgating a motorcycle, there's a good chance the car won't stop as quickly as we can in an emergency stop," he said. Copeland advised riders to avoid the popular all- black biker fashion. "That's probably the worst thing you can do," Copeland said, adding that when he rides, he wears high-visibility materials. Copeland also advised riders to maintain a safety cushion around the motor- cycle. "Maximize the space you have," Copeland said. "We're advocates for lane position." But lane position and re- flective gear are just a small part of what riders can do to stay safe. "The best thing a new rider can do is take a course like ours," Cope- land said. New riders can spend 20 hours over the course of a week - four hours in-class and two eight-hour days of hands-on training over the weekend. Copeland has been teaching the course for 35 years. Aside from the skills and knowledge passed on in the course, riders who complete a ministry-ap- proved motorcycle safety course are eligible for ma- jor insurance discounts. "Some insurers will not even insure a new rider if they haven't taken a course," Copeland said. Premiums for new rid- ers can exceed $4,000 annu- ally. "It's a $1,500 difference," Copeland said. "The regis- tration fee seems pretty cheap by comparison." Courses at MTOhp are $503 plus HST for the M1 Exit course and $429 plus HST for the M2 Exit and in- clude a ministry-certified riding test.
