They will be when 500 motorcycles and riders thunder through down- town Oakville with a police escort Sunday Aug. 11. More than 500 motorcy- cles will gather in Oakville Sunday Aug. 11, to up the an- te in a quest to raise $1 mil- lion for SickKids Hospital. This is Ride For Sick Kids' (RFSK) 11th year rais- ing money for Sick Kids, and the group is focused on meeting the million-dollar mark. Last year was RFSK's first year in Oakville afterfirst year in Oakville afterf switching west from Osha- wa, where the ride began. The 2018 Anniversary ride brought $94,000 to SickKids. With the first RFSKWith the first RFSKW Bowling Night and dona- tions from supporters, they've already raised near- ly $18,000 for 2019. "This ride just gets big- ger and better every year and of course it's all for SickKids Hospital," said Nella Figliano, co-founder and chair. "It takes a lot of work by a lot of volunteers and sponsors to make this happen. This year we're working closely with the City of Oakville and the Halton Regional Police Ser- vice, who will escort our ride through the heart of the city as we head out to Milton. With more than 500 motorcycles in convoy, it's a spectacular sight." The 2019 Ride for Sick- Kids will meet at Policaro Harley Davidson (191 Wye- croft Rd., Oakville) and will parade through Oakville while heading out for a long, scenic ride to The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 197 (15 Wright Ave. in Acton). The Ride for SickKids is thrilled to have former To- ronto Maple Leaf and cur- rent TSN radio host, Carlo Colaiacovo, as its MC this year. SickKids holds a very special place in his heart since his two-year-old son, Leo, became a patient of the hospital this past spring. There are thousands of stories about the patients and families at this world- renowned facility. This year, Jadarose Jenner - a 14- year-old osteosarcoma can- cer survivor - will share her story to remind everyone why this ride is so critical. "I was a very athletic teen," says Jadarose. "I loved playing basketball, volleyball, soccer and track and field." When she hurt her knee backflipping on a trampo- line, it seemed that the pain and swelling was from the injury and cumu-from the injury and cumu-f lative from all her other sports. Unfortunately, an X-ray, biopsy and scan con- firmed the worst: It wasfirmed the worst: It wasf cancer. Even worse, it was bone cancer, the osteosar- coma which both inspired Canadian hero Terry Fox's run for Cancer Research and eventually metasta- sized and took his life. Like Terry Fox, Jada- rose had little choice but to undergo the amputation of her leg. Her surgery, though, came with a twist - literally. "After chemotherapy, I began my preparation for my amputation to save my life," she says. "I chose rota- tion plasty. It's kinda freaky at first because it meant part of my upper thigh and knee would be amputated and then my lower leg would be re-attached 180 de- grees to the rest of my thigh. It means I don't look like the rest of my friends and my foot is now my knee." Her foot - now facing backwards - slips into her prosthetic and allows her a range of motion and feed- back to augment her stabil- ity and movement. One lucky raffle ticket holder will win a new 2019 Harley-Davidson XG750 Street motorcycle. The ride registration be- gins at 8 a.m. For details or information go to www.ri- deforsickkids.com or in per- son at Policaro Harley Da- vidson, 191 Wyecroft Ave. The ride begins at 11 a.m. GET READY TO RUMBLE OAKVILLE Close to 600 riders took part in last year's annual Ride for SickKids.
