The agency, which investi- gates reports involving police where there has been death, se- rious injury or allegations of sexual assault, said it recently became aware of a group using the SIU's toll-free number (1-800- 787-8529) to make fraudulent calls. In some cases, the person is told that there is something wrong with their social insur- ance number, and that if they don't continue with the call they will be charged or jailed. Monica Hudon, SIU commu- nications co-ordinator, empha- sized the SIU does not contact in- dividuals by phone and ask for personal information and cau- tioned residents not to give these callers any information. "We learned of the calls after dozens of individuals from across the country inquired as to whether the calls were legiti- mate," she said. The agency issued a news re- lease to minimize potential vic- timization of those who receive the calls. The initial calls were made around July 18.
