An Oakville man is one of two people facing a rash of charges after a police traffic stop yielded more than 400 pounds of canna- bis worth nearly $2 mil- lion. The stop occurred around 2 p.m. Saturday when officers with the Northumberland Detach- ment of the OPP conduct- ed a traffic stop on a white cargo rental van after re- ceiving a call from a con- cerned citizen regarding a possible impaired driver that just left the service centre in Port Hope head- ing east on Highway 401. Officers stopped the ve- hicle just east of Cobourg. During the traffic stop, police said, officers sus- pected that the occupants of the vehicle were in- volved in the trafficking of illicit drugs. Officers seized 426 pounds of cannabis which has a street value of about $1.9 million, police said in a release. Northumberland OPP Const. Rob Simpson called it a "significant seizure." Kiryl Andrushkevich, 26, of Oakville, and Dam- aris Nataren Ortega, 32, of Toronto are facing multi- ple drug and trafficking charges, including posses- sion of over 30 g of dried cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place, posses- sion of illicit cannabis, possess, produce, sell dis- tribute or import any- thing with intention to use it to produce, sell or dis- tribute illicit cannabis and possession for the purpose of distributing. Andrushkevich was additionally charged un- der the Criminal Code of Canada with failing to comply with an undertak- ing. Ortega was also charged under the Canna- bis Control Act with hav- ing care or control of a ve- hicle or boat with canna- bis readily available.
