"We would be remiss if we didn't recog- nize the contribution of the Hoare family and their assistance during this emergen- cy," said Marshall. "It was a coincidence that two crews were on scene nearby, but that coinci- dence and the professionalism and ac- tions of our firefighters saved Mr. Hoare and we are happy that he could join us for this presentation," said Marshall. Also at the Recognition Ceremony, the family of the late Halton Hills firefighter David Shannon received a Ceremonial Helmet as a lasting memory of the sacri- fice he made in the protection of his com- munity. Shannon died in 2000, at the age of 54, due to work-related cancer. He had been a Halton Hills volunteer (part-time) firefighter for 26 years. In the fall of 2013 the Acton Fire Fighters Association submitted Shannon's name to the selection committee for inclusion on the Canadian Fallen Fire Fighters National Memorial in Ottawa. Last spring the Association was notified that Shannon's name would be included, but that based on the criteria around date of death until date of submission they would not be able to allow the family to participate in the service of remembrance and the family would not receive the Cer- emonial Helmet. But the Acton Fire Fighters Association then made contact with the Foundation and was able to secure a Helmet to present to the family. Awards for long service and exemplary service were also handed at out the event.
