ENTERTAINMENT Georgetown resident Collette Andrea, an inde- pendent singer-songwriter who has been actively been playing live music in and around George- town and Toronto for over five years, has been se- lected to participate in CBC Music's Searchlight Contests, which search for Canada's best new artist. Every year CBC Music hosts a new music con- test known as the Searchlight contest. This con- test allows new and emerging Canadian artists to submit their music for the search of Canada's best new artist. "I have entered my original song 'A Song About Spring,' a nostalgic song about long win- ters and short springs. I wrote this song last year during a brutal ice storm that left me and most of southern Ontario without power for a week. We were literally iced over!" said Andrea. "This song is about a longing for a beautiful spring, after such a long and harsh Canadian winter. On a side note, my music video for this song was filmed independently in our very own Hungry Hollow." "I wasn't planning on releasing or even re- cording 'A Song About Spring,' however, the song was recorded so easily in one or two takes, it really captured my natural sound and ener- gy," she said. Having the most votes in the first round of sub- mission is the most important part of the contest, says Andrea, as iconic Canadian musician judges will be choosing music to go into the next round. Andrea (also known as Collette Falk), a Ry- erson graduate with a Social Work degree, has grown up in and around the GTA. Currently based out of Georgetown, she started out learn- ing the bass guitar at age 13. Although a self- taught guitarist, she picked up the basics in her guitar class at Christ the King Secondary School. Andrea has been actively writing music since the age of 14, exploring blues, rock, indie, and folk music genres. Her influences range from a variety of artist and genres such as Feist, Cat Pow- er, Etta James, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Bessie Smith, The Rolling Stones, The Guess Who, John Lennon and Neil Young.
