SPORTS 'Quoteunquote' 'I guessed on the outside and guessed right and drove it home.'-- Race car driver Gary Klutt, see below Georgetown's Aidan McVeigh receives some advice from his coach, former Olympic competitor Ashok Ku- mar, during the recent Canada East Youth Wrestling Championships in Niagara Falls. McVeigh took home his third straight Eastern Canadian title after winning all four of his matches. Sitting in third place behind leader Scott Steckly and Andrew Ranger on the final lap, the 22-year-old Klutt was able to get past the duo after they made contact in Turns 9 and 10, allowing the rookie driver to win the Claring- ton 200 in only his seventh career start. Klutt also captured his first career pole award during qualifying on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised about his fortunate finish the following day at the season opener at Ca- nadian Tire Motorsport Park. "Well, I saw the 27 (Ranger) over the 22 (Steckly) and then the 22 up in the air and there was a hole," Klutt told the Toronto Star. "I guessed on the outside and guessed right and drove it home. I wasn't surprised because I've seen Ranger try those kinds of moves be- fore so I knew there was a possibility." Klutt is also helping to publicize a Toronto charity that helps feed the homeless. "It's called 'Thank You, Toronto' and they sell hats. Every hat they sell, they feed a home- less person. I'm a real estate major and I did a lot of stuff on homelessness, which is a major issue in Toronto. I thought it was cool." Halton Hills resident Gary Klutt not only won the biggest race of his career Sunday at Cana- dian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, but he's also throwing his support behind a home- less charity. Submitted photo Busy summer ahead for GSC The Georgetown Soccer Club kicks off another outdoor season this week with a number of changes and upcoming events to note. Currently the largest sports organization in Halton Hills with approximately 2,800 players registered in youth and adult leagues, several on-field events are scheduled to be hosted by the GSC at Trafalgar Sports Park, including the Ontario Women's Soccer League champion- ship match on July 18, along with festivals for the under 8-12 age groups. Additional sessions of the popular third year of the parents & tots program have been scheduled to help with the introduction of the sport to newcomers and the summer camps during the months of July and August have also expanded in size. The club has renamed its annual All-Star & Rep Tournament held July 25-26 after longtime coach and executive member Eustace Collins, who passed away last year. There are still some spaces available for players in various age groups in the house leagues. For more info visit the website: www.georgetownsoccerclub.com For the third consecutive year, Georgetown's Aidan McVeigh took top spot in his division at the Canada East Wrestling Festival and this was his most dominant season to date. The Grade 6 Holy Cross Elementary School student won all four of his matches at this year's festival held earlier this month in Niagara Falls and just like in the 2014 competition, his first contest of the weekend was the most difficult. Competing in the 52.2-kg. class for the Kids' Division (Grades 5-6), McVeigh was nearly pinned in the second round of his opening match by Kawartha's Noah Flesh, but regained control and prevailed by pinfall with a 9-4 score. McVeigh, who turns 12 in July and trains at the Akhara of Champions Wrestling Club in Mis- sissauga, quickly pinned his next two opponents and clinched the Canada East title by building a 10-point lead in the first round over Mississauga Matmen's Jugraj Dhillon in the final. McVeigh didn't lose a match all season, dat- ing back to January, winning five straight tourna- ments, including the provincial championship. In just two bouts did he concede any points. Bulldogs host Excelsiors Saturday A battle of unbeaten teams turned out to be a lopsided victory for the host Halton Hills Bulldogs last week as they pounded the Markham Ironheads 14-3 in an Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League contest. Campbell Parker led the offensive charge with four goals, while last year's leading scorer, Adam Charalambides, hav- ing finished his studies at Rutgers Univer- sity for the spring, made his season debut with a hat trick and two assists. Jamie Batten (2), Adam Elinesky, Neil Mowat, Jesse Oliver, Connor Brown and Cam Downey also tallied for the home side and the latter added six assists. The 'Dogs returned to action Wednes- day in Port Credit against the Mississauga Tomahawks. Their next home date is on Saturday versus the Brampton Excelsiors at 7:30 p.m.
