The novice 'Dogs romped in their second game over Cambridge 10-1 before defeating Simcoe 6-5 in overtime in the semifinals to set up a rematch with the Blue Devils. Trailing 4-1 entering the third pe- riod, the Bulldogs rallied to a 5-4 victory in their first tournament of the season. Submitted photo Dramatic win for novice 'Dogs Bell catches on with new pairs' partner Figure skater Hayleigh Bell has found a new partner and hopes the pairing with Manitoba native and 2010 Olympian Rudi Swiegers will result in a place on Skate Canada's national team. The two met this past December in Calgary, where the 18-year-old Acton native Bell has resided for the past two years at the Canadian Sport Institute, and agreed to become a team in February. Bell, a Stewwartown Public School graduate, previ- ously competed at two World Championships and two Grand Prix events with Alistair Sylvester of Stratford, who decided to drop out of skating two years ago. Bell is also just rounding back into form after two surgeries to correct a problem with her landing leg. The 27-year-old Swiegers split up with former pairs' partner Paige Lawrence in May 2014 after a nine-year partnership and two Winter Olympics appearances. The first official meet together for Bell and Swiegers is slated for the Summer Skate competition in August in Thornhill and they're fast-tracking choreography for the technical and free program in order to crack the top five in the country and earn a national team berth, which would be a first for Bell. The pairs' duo has also been as- signed by Skate Canada to compete in the Senior Grand International event in Moscow in November. Acton-born Hayleigh Bell and new partner Rudi Swiegers have been practising in Calgary over the last few weeks in hopes of becoming one of Canada's top figure skating pairs. DUO'S DEBUT JUST BEACHY: A girls' beach volleyball team from Georgetown earned gold medals in their very first tournament together recently at Emerald Lake in Cambridge. Georgetown Impact club team members Erin Young (left) and Amanda Marshall, Grade 8 students at Stewarttown Public School, advanced all the way to the championship match in the under-14 girls' Premier Division at the Ontario Volleyball Association satellite event and although heavy rain forced cancellation of the final, each team collected gold medals for their efforts.
