Hayward's streak comes to halt Apparently, there is room for compassion in the rough-and-tumble sport of cross- country motorbike riding, as displayed by Georgetown's Kyle Bichard at a recent race in Alvinston, Ont. Bichard, 17, was runner-up in the open- ing race for the World Enduro Canada se- ries in the Ontario junior men's (18-and- under) division in Chatsworth and had a comfortable lead out of the starting gates in race two at Alvinston before coming upon a rider in another class who had run into a tree and was in distress. The competitor had broken his leg and Bichard stopped his Yamaha to attend to the victim, then rode off to get help, caus- ing him to lose ground to those who had passed, and after rejoining the fray, he end- ed up placing third in the two-hour race run in intense heat. Bichard, who will attend Grade 12 at Georgetown District High School in Sep- tember, was commended after the race for his sportsmanship and the overall series championship still isn't out of his reach as there are three races remaining this sum- mer, in Wingham and a two-day event in Walton, near Listowel. He placed fourth in a series race last weekend in Parry Sound. Hayward looked to be in control but a five- over-par 77 allowed Uxbridge's Gail Pimm and Mississauga's Debbie Court to come back after three rounds and force a playoff, which was won by Pimm with a birdie on the first extra hole. Hayward, an Aurora resident and Cana- dian Golf Hall of Famer, finished in a tie for second in the Mid-Amateur draw and will Ontario in the inter-provincial competition at the Canadian Senior Women's Championship Aug. 26-28 at Sawmill Creek Golf Resort and Spa in Camlachie. North Halton's Julie Green placed in a tie for 45th in the senior category last week. Meanwhile, at the GAO Junior Boys' Cham- pionship on the Dalewood course in Port Hope, North Halton junior member Thomas Hunt finished 15th overall following rounds of 76-73-70-77. Acton's Riley Spear, also of North Halton, tied for 35th with 74-76-80-74. More than 500 players are regis- tered in house league with the Halton Hills Minor Baseball Association (HHMBA) this season. The Acton and Georgetown associations amalgamated this past winter, creating the HHMBA. He also took part in the aptly named Grand Prix de Mud in Campbellville late last month, which was not a WEC Series event. Yet the Georgetown Impact indoor teammates emerged as the gold medal win- ners at the Emerald Lake event, taking the final 13- 21, 21-15 and 15-5 to cap an exhausting weekend in which Gibson and Watson had played in another OVA tournament in Cobourg the previous day. It was an excellent showing for the rapidly growing Georgetown Impact Beach Volleyball program as Ryan Harris and Hunter Gibson earned silver med- als in the under-13 boys' Premier Division, while Jordan Pereira and Ryan Docker placed third in the same draw after bowing out to Harris and Gibson in the semifinal.
