COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE (NOT FOR PROFIT) LINKS2CARE The recipient of the Community Excellence Award (Not for Profit) is Links2Care, a multi-site, non-profit, charitable health and community ser- vices organization delivering a wide variety of pro- grams and services to enhance the lives of seniors, adults, youth and children in the Halton/Missis- sauga areas. Among the contributions Links2Care has made in Halton Hills are ongoing programs that provide free and accessible services such as food resourc- es, holiday gifts and school supplies for children, and the Caregiver Recharge service that provides caregivers in Halton Hills the opportunity to take breaks from caring for their loved one. Gross revenues for the organization have grown to $6.4 million this past year from $2.7 mil- lion in 2006. With close to 250 employees serving approximately 10,000 clients in its coverage area, Links2Care has overseen an exponential increase in programs, clients served, staff and number of volunteers in each year of operation. COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE (BUSINESS) TANDIA Tandia, a co-op bank with branches in George- town and Acton, is the recipient of the Chamber's Community Excellence Award (Business). Formerly known as Prosperity One and the Teachers Credit Union when it was established in 1940, Hamilton-based Tandia strives to ensure its members "are considered our neighbours from down the street and not account numbers on a ledger." The co-operative believes its profits should have positive financial, social and environmental impact on the communities in which we work and live. Tandia has been involved in local community efforts such as the Adopt A School program, Spe- cial Olympics sponsor and volunteer, HCCEF and Angel Foundation for Learning supporter. ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE WASTEWISE With a paid staff of nine people and a core group of 15-20 volunteers, Wastewise Community Resource Centre is a non-profit, registered charity that focuses on reuse, recycling and education of the 3Rs. The organization's goal is to be continually self-supporting while employing local people, pur- chasing goods and services from the local econo- my and being able to donate funds and goods back to the community, which has earned it the Envi- ronmental Excellence Award. The centre recently expanded its services to include acceptance of electronic waste recycling and larger white goods and increased the size of its building to 13,000 square feet from 10,000 to accommodate the need for more parking. Waste- wise has given back to the local community with several monetary donations, including $29,700 to the Town recycling program and $9,300 to GDHS.
