The Georgetown run takes place at the Gellert Centre, with registration opening at 8 a.m. A PanAm representative will be speak- ing at 8:10 a.m. and the acting Mayor at 8:20 a.m. the run then starts at 8:30 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. In Acton, the official opening is at 8 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by the start of the run, which continues until 3 p.m. Participants can arrive any time between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Georgetown or 3 p.m. in Acton to run or donate. The name, Terry Fox Run, may imply to some that it is a competitive event, but in reality it is a non-competitive, all inclusive, family-oriented event, for people of all ages. There is no entry fee, no minimum pledge amount and participants can walk, jog, run, cycle, wheel strollers, walk dogs and com- plete distances they are comfortable with. Terry Fox supporters who do not wish to participate can come to the run site and simply make a donation by going online to www.terryfox.org. All funds raised are mandated to go di- rectly to the Terry Fox Foundation for re- search and any goods or services required must be donated. The Terry Fox Foundation is not associat- ed with the Canadian Cancer Society or any other cancer fundraising organizations. To date almost $700 million has been raised by Terry Fox Runs with the Acton and George- town events contributing over $1,122,000 to that total. It is imporant to recognize the efficiency of the Foundation, where 84 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research, with the remaining 16 cents used to fund 33 full-time staff in 10 offices across Canada as well as associated shipping, material and other costs. To date 1,212 cancer research projects have been funded by the Foundation and in 2014-15, the Foundation will be funding three areas of cancer research with $26.5 million.
