The American play by David MacGregor, produced by Gina Van Raalte and directed by David Cairns, explores the theme of 'what is love'. The play opens in a somewhat fantasy mode in a Toronto loft with two best friends and avid hockey fans Gene (M.H. Teskey) and Eliot (Jhuntue D. Grey) glued to the TV set as the Toronto Maple Leafs are on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup. Don't snort; I said it was a fantasy. Enter Gene's girlfriend Marisa (Katrina Gibson) and her mother Kay (Pat Ball) to wit- ness the final minutes of the game. Gene, overcome with emotion, decides to celebrate the win by proposing marriage to Marisa, and then in the excitement breaks his leg. Two months later, Gene's cast comes off, and he's a changed man. It seems the doc- tors tried an experimental procedure of grafting oyster DNA onto his bone to allow for faster healing. Unfortunately oysters have a tendency to change their sex from male to female... let the laughs begin. The four-member cast is a good team… something the current Leafs know nothing about. They are all standouts, each delight- ful in their respective roles as forward, wing- man, defence or goal. The set, lightning and all else that goes into the play was good. I, in actual fact, have little to criticize because I was too busy enjoying the play. The first half was a laugh a minute, while the second is less comedy and more delving into the theme. Consider the Oyster is a fun play, and combined with a pre-show dinner or after-show drink in Downtown Georgetown it makes for a good evening's light entertainment.
