He delivered that mes- sage in the Ontario Legisla- ture on Dec. 3. "The current Halton Courthouse, which was built more than 50 years ago, is aging, overcrowded, unsafe, and inadequate to meet the needs of our rapidly growing Region," Arnott told MPPs. When current the Halton Courthouse in Milton was first built in 1962, it served a population of approximately 190,000 people. While there was an addition in 1979, it now serves a population nearly three times that size - approximately 550,000. That number is only expected to increase further as the Region of Halton continues to grow. "The Attorney General assures us that a new courthouse for Halton Region is a pri- ority for her Ministry. I thank her for the in- terest she has shown to date, and urge her to keep pushing," Arnott said. Arnott pointed out that the Fall Econom- ic Statement showed that the Government has already allocated $243 million in spend- ing for Justice Infrastructure this year alone, up almost $100 million from last year. "Where is the Halton Courthouse in their long- term infrastructure plan?" he asked. Arnott also reiterated his willingness to work coop- eratively with MPPs from all parties to get the Courthouse built. "Halton Region needs a new courthouse," Arnott argued. "I am prepared to reach across the aisle and work with the other Halton area MPPs. Let's work together and get this done." Afterward, Arnott also acknowledged the support of Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, Regional Council, area lawyer Paul Stunt, and the Halton County Law Association. "They have all been very supportive of a new Courthouse for Halton Region," Arnott said. "I want to continue to work with them to plan for the infrastructure our Region needs."
