37| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,S eptem ber 13,2018 theifp.ca Motorcyclists gathered at the Georgetown Market- place Wednesday evening to rev their engines and show off their bikes - all while talking about road safety, of course. On Aug. 22, Halton Re- gional Police Service brought their Show & Shine event to Georgetown in the hopes of getting more riders to come together from dif- ferent areas of Halton, Sgt. Ryan Snow, head of the traf- fic services unit, said. The event invites riders and enthusiasts to gather and chat with one another, as well as the officers on site, asking any questions surrounding safety, equip- ment, technique and shar- ing the road. Motorcyclists will learn how to properly pick up a bike and about the right equipment to wear, as well as about braking and han- dling. "One of the big things I tell motorcyclists is wheth- er you are in the right or the wrong, at the end of the day, physics is going to rule the day - so you have to ride safe, you need to assume ev- eryone else doesn't see you," he said. Snow says he is an avid motorcyclist himself. Once he assumed his role as head of the traffic services unit in 2016, he began rolling out programs that allow offi- cers to interact with the community. One of the po- lice service's most success- ful programs has been the motorcycle piece, he said. "It's been a really great way to give back to the com- munity and for people to get out and connect with even more motorcycles than solely the south end of the region," he added. Snow adds that one of his favourite aspects of the event is that it's completely unscripted and he gets to feel out the crowd and de- termine the information that is most relevant to them. "Generally, what's great about it is this is that one hobby or lifestyle that real- ly transcends a lot of social boundaries," Snow said. "You get people from all walks of life that show up. If you drive two wheels - whether you drive a moped or you drive a big cruiser, whether or not you are a weekend warrior or you drive across the country - that's what's nice about this. It's come one come all." For further information about HRPS initiatives, vis- it https://www.haltonpo- lice.ca/.
