9 | The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,A pril 4,2019 theifp.ca When Doug Penrice and his fellow Lions Club mem- bers were reviewing candi- dates for the Georgetown Citizen of the Year, he no- ticed a common theme in the two nominations for Dee Dee Haynes-Ridley. "It was one of wonder- ment, just how one woman could do so much," he said. And when he called to tell Haynes-Ridley that she would be this year's recipi- ent, he was met with a re- action that had a lot in com- mon with past winners, let- ting him know they had made the right choice. "They don't think they have done that much and they are always very mod- est," he said. The Lions Club formally recognized Haynes-Ridley at their annual citizen of the year dinner. Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette presented Haynes-Ridley with a key to the town. He marveled at the hours citizens dedicate to the community. "That's what volunteer- ing does, it enriches our community," he said. Haynes-Ridley has been actively involved in base- ball and softball as well as bowling, serving in every capacity from coach to president. "She's been an enthusi- astic ambassador in the community soliciting funds for new baseball dia- monds," Penrice said. "With the growth in our community, baseball regis- trations are increasing each year volunteers like Dee Dee are essential to help children have their best experience possible." The Lions Club also ho- noured Fred Zorge as the first winner of the service club member of the year. Zorge has been a member of the Lions Club in Georgetown for 60 years. "Sixty years of service to the Lions Club and to the community in George- town," said Wellington- Halton Hills MP Michael Chong. "The Lions Club does a lot of great work, the Santa Claus parade and dona- tions to various causes but is also a big supporter for Guide Dogs. It costs $25,000 to train a guide dog. It is awesome to see them out in the community being trained so we thank you and your fellow Lions for that commitment." "Sixty years volunteer- ing and still going at it at 92 years old," Bonnette said. "Unbelievable."
