About 100 people turned out for the inaugural five- kilometre walk on March 24, which kicked off at the Furnace Room Brewery and made its way through local streets. The event was spear- headed by local couple El- len Howard and Todd Ford- King, along with friend An- drea Butt, who have chil- dren diagnosed with Tou- rette's syndrome. Funds raised will be do- nated to Tourette Canada for its programs, which in- clude free workshops for students and teachers and virtual support groups for individuals with Tourette's syndrome and their fami- lies. "We also created a dia- logue in our communities and raised awareness about Tourette's syn- drome," said Howard. "We have received messages from complete strangers with words of support and encouragement." The event was support- ed by the Tim Hortons at 326 Guelph St., which pro- vided coffee, hot chocolate and Timbits, the Furnace Room Brewery with the use of its facility and dona- tion of $250, and the Kenne- dy family, which donated pizza and cake for all walk- ers. "We have been reminded of what an amazing sup- port group there is in our community," said Howard. "We are really looking for- ward to next year's walk and have met many fami- lies who will be joining us in our trek." For more information, visit www.tourette.ca.
