15 | The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,M ay 16,2019 theifp.ca Plans are in full swing for this year's installment of the Relay for Life at Christ the King Catholic Second- ary School. The fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, which sees team members take turns walking all night long in the name of charity, is set to kick off at 7 p.m. on June 1 at the Guelph Street school. The event is headed up by former Christ the King (CtK) student Lauren Har- rison, who personally took over the initiative last year following the Halton Catho- lic District School Board's decision to ban donations to charities they feel don't align with Catholic values. Despite the board's verdict, Harrison was still able to se- cure the CtK field as the event venue. "I love how this Relay for Life is youth-run, for youth," she said. "Our goal again this year is $80,000, but we believe this relay will be bigger and better than the last." So far, 61 teams have reg- istered and more than $12,000 in donations have been received, with this number expected to climb dramatically as the date gets closer, said Harrison. For the ambitious local teen, fundraising for cancer also holds personal mean- ing. "I know a lot of people in my family who've passed away from cancer or sur- vived cancer," she said. "I just think if everyone fo- cused really hard on mak- ing a difference in the fight against cancer, it wouldn't be a scary thing anymore." Registration deadline for the relay is May 24. Local residents can also partici- pate as volunteers, adult su- pervisors or cancer survi- vors. To sign up or for more information, visit relayfor- life.ca/georgetownyouth.
