It marked the second straight year that a record amount was raised to support local charities. "This is a great charity and they do good work in the community," said Tim Hortons franchise owner Jim Di Natale. "This is business and the commu- nity really coming togeth- er." The money will be used to support BBBS Halton's mentorship programs. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD The Acton Gems Girls Club is helping make Christmas brighter for un- derprivileged children around the world. The group at Acton's Bethel Church recently packed over 120 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, which collects boxes filled with toys, hygiene items, school supplies and more for children living in desperate situations. Donations of required items - everything from bars of soap to Beanie Boos - were received from local residents to make the pro- ject possible. The girls also crafted cards to give each box a personalized touch. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Georgetown's Sarah Fil- lier was named the Eastern College Athletic Confer- ence women's hockey play- er of the week. Last year's NCAA rook- ie of the year had a goal and three assists in the Prince- ton Tigers' 7-2 win over Union College and fol- lowed that up with two goals and an assist in a 4-1 win over RPI the next day. Earlier this month, Fil- lier scored the winning goal for Canada's national team in a 4-1 win over the United States in the opener of a two-game series be- tween the hockey rivals. BEARCATS OFSAA BOUND The Acton Bearcats de- feated Académie Catho- lique Mère-Terese 26-24, 27- 25, 13-25, 25-17 to qualify for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associa- tions senior boys' volley- ball A championship tour- nament Nov. 21-23 in Chat- ham. Acton went undefeated, going 7-0 to finish first in the Halton Secondary School Athletic Associa- tion tier 2 standings. The Bearcats then swept Nel- son and King's Christian Collegiate in the playoffs to win the tier 2 title. Acton only lost two sets all season, winning 14 in a row between Oct. 2 and Nov. 13. - with files from Melanie Hennessey Do you know of a person, group, business or team ex- celling or helping in their community.
