Captain Joseph McFee of the Salvation Army looked around his city and saw people struggling to buy food, much less have a Christ- mas dinner. McFee wanted to help, but had no money to do so. So he went down to the San Francisco docks, found a crab pot, and then stood by the ferry land- ing to collect donations. He collect- ed coins from the passengers as they got off the ferry and raised enough money to hold a Christ- mas dinner for those who could not afford their own. One hundred and 28 years later, the crab pot has been replaced by red kettles that have become syn- onymous with the holidays as the Salvation Army continues to help those in need in cities and towns around the world. The Georgetown and Acton Salvation Army kicked off their annual campaigns last week. Sal- vation Army Georgetown has set a campaign goal of $80,000 for this season, while Salvation Army Ac- ton will have a goal of $65,000. The campaign still serves its original purpose of providing food to those in need through the holi- days, but it also helps fund several projects throughout the year, in- cluding sending kids to camp and providing emergency food and shelter throughout the year. "This community has been overly generous," said Major Rick Pollard of the Salvation Army Ac- ton. "In the five years I've been here, we've always had amazing support from the community." The two Salvation Armys will also conduct a joint toy drive. Any- one wishing to contribute can drop off a new, unwrapped gift at the Georgetown Marketplace.
