Born in Toronto, fami- ly members said Harris worked as a journalist at The Globe and Mail dur- ing his teen years while also attending courses in journalism at the Univer- sity of Toronto. Both his job and stud- ies were put on hold fol- lowing the start of the Second World War. Harris was trained as a pilot and went on to serve as an advanced flight instructor as theflight instructor as thef war continued. In 1942 Harris married his sweetheart Bernice. One family legend has it that Harris would fly over the cottage Ber- nice's family owned and rock the wings of his plane, so she knew it was him. They would have three children together (David, Bob, and Reed) and were married 70 years until Bernice's death in 2013. After the war Harris completed his university degree and resumed working with The Globe and Mail. He would eventually move on to the CBC where he worked behind the scenes on various productions. Later Harris became the director of public re- lations for CN rail, a job that took him and his family to Montreal.family to Montreal.f Harris would spend 25 years in Montreal, first in his role with CN and then as an executive vice pres- ident with Bell Canada. When Harris retired, he and Bernice moved back to Toronto to be closer to their children. They bought a cottage on Lake of Bays in north- eastern Muskoka and sa- voured many summers there. The pair also travelled the world during their re- tirement years and en- joyed countless visits with their six grandchil- dren. Family members said Harris is very musical and always a hit at par- ties and is also a terrific writer. On Tuesday, March 10 family members gath-family members gath-f ered at the Sunrise Se- nior Living facility in Oakville to wish Harris a happy birthday.
