Anna Salveta, 85, says she was enjoying a breath of fresh morning air out- side her Highgate Court home in early March, when she suddenly col- lapsed. "I hit my hip on the side- walk, the curb part, and broke it," she said. "I was lying there, sort of semi-conscious and I thought, 'Oh my God. I'm going to die here.' Fortu- nately for me, a couple of my neighbours happened to look out their window and they came running down and phoned an am- bulance." Anna was taken to Oak- ville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital where she would remain for several weeks. She said that while she received excellent care from the doctors, being in afrom the doctors, being in af hospital as the coronavi- rus pandemic was getting underway made the expe- rience a long and tedious one as she could not have any visitors. Following extensive physiotherapy, Anna was released from the hospital and returned to her home on April 22. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, she says, her isolation did not continue in her neighbourhood. Anna says from the mo- ment she returned home, her neighbours have been there for her. "I have received flowers, food, home baking. Everyfood, home baking. Everyf neighbour has come to check with my husband how I am getting on," said Anna. "They have 100 per cent stood by me and my hus- band, prepared to do any- thing we need." Anna said one little girl cut six daffodils from her mother's garden, put them in a Ziploc bag with some ice and placed them in An- na's mailbox. And when she is out in the neighbourhood walk- ing on the sidewalk with her walker, as part of her therapy, the children who see her wave and step aside so she can pass, she said. "Every day there is someone checking on us and making sure that ev- erything is fine," said An- na. "I would like to say thank you to all of them. This is people taking care of people in this time." The Oakville senior says doctors were never able to tell her why she col- lapsed in early March. She suspects suddenly moving from the heat of her home to chilly air out- side briefly overwhelmed her senses.
