However this September the Team is hosting its first-ever online outreach event - BUILDATHON. The event is for individual students in grades 8 to 12. Its goal is to simulate the planning, design and building processes that team members would experience each season. Starting September 19 students can participate in this week-long event from home. Using materials provided they will design and build a system to complete a fun challenge in a week. Then theywill demonstrate their skills bymaking a Zoom presentation to a panel of judges. During the week students will be able to interact with current team members and ask questions during a live stream Q&A. This free online event aims to stimulate students to think creatively about a technical challenge. We are a registered charity led by volunteer adult mentors. Entering our 6th season we provide opportunities for members to acquire training in computer aided design, programming, machine tool and fabricating expertise while they are also acquiring valuable teamwork and presentation skills. Our 70kg robots enter competitions and for the last two seasons we have progressed to the World Championships in the USA. Team meetings take place in the evenings in Oakville. Oakville Community FIRST Robotics Team Offers Novel Online Event The Halton Catholic District School Board has announced changes to start- ing dates for students as schools get ready to re-open. • The first day of school will be de- layed until Wednesday, Sept. 9. • For secondary school students, in- struction will begin on Sept. 9. • Students in Grades 1-8 will all begin school Monday, Sept. 14, both in-class and remote learning students. However, elementary students will be eased into the new school year by coming into school in smaller groups on Sept. 9, 10 and 11. • On Wednesday, Sept. 9, only students in Grades 1-8 with surnames beginning with the letters A-F will come to school. • On Thursday, Sept. 10, students in Grades 1-8 whose surnames begin with the letters G-N will come to school. • On Friday, Sept. 11, only students in Grades 1-8 with surnames beginning with the letters O-A will come to school. • The delay allows staff to rehearse the new health and safety protocols, as well as facilitate the set-up of learning management systems and resources for distance learning, and help alleviate some of the anxiety in students, accord- ing to the HCDSB. • As per the board's usual practice, there will be a staggered entry for kin- dergarten students with Year 1 and 2 ori- entation taking place on Tuesday, Sept. 8 and Wednesday, Sept. 9. Year 2 students will begin on Thursday, Sept. 10. Year 1 staggered entry will take place on Fri- day, Sept. 11 and Monday. Sept. 14. All kindergarten students will attend school beginning Tuesday, Sept. 15. • Students in the self-contained Com- munity Living, Essential Skills and Structured Teaching special education class in elementary schools will begin in-class instruction on Wednesday, Sept. 9. • Secondary school students in Life Skills classes will begin in-class instruc- tion on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
