The centre's major features in- clude a six-lane, 25-metre lap pool and a warm water pool, which are both scheduled to open shortly af- ter Thanksgiving. Both pools have accessible ramps and there is a water wheel- chair available for use. "As a result of us opening, Cen- tennial Pool has permanently closed. They were home to the syn- chronized swim team, so we have taken over their programming," said Jennifer McPetrie, manager of the community centre. "The Oakville Aquatic Swim Club will also be using quite a bit of time here." The centre also has a 10,000- square-foot gymnasium, which of- fers a full-size NBA basketball court. The space can also be used to create two junior basketball courts, four badminton courts, two regulation volleyball courts and four pickleball courts. The community centre is also home to Oakville's largest indoor walking track. McPetrie noted the outer lane is 117 metres in length, which means it would take just eight and a half laps around the track to run a kilo- metre. There is also an upstairs fitness studio for group fitness classes and a more than 2,000-square-foot fit- ness centre. "This is our weight and cardio room. It includes state-of-the-art technology. All of our fitness equipment has Bluetooth connec- tivity and all of the latest and great- est where you can connect to Net- flix or YouTube while you are run- ning or using the spin bikes," said McPetrie. There are also multiple meeting rooms. While the centre could poten- tially accommodate hundreds of people at a time, the coronavirus pandemic and regulations to stop its spread mean the facility is cur- rently only open to pre-booked fit- ness activities and facility tours. "We are limited to 50 people per space. The biggest challenge with that is that you could have 50 peo- ple in the pool and 50 people in the gymnasium, but you can never have more than 50 people in the lobby," said McPetrie. "So, we have to be really careful in terms of our timing of programs, so we don't have any congrega- tion." McPetrie said the time it takes to clean and decontaminate an ar- ea after use also has to be taken in- to consideration. She said currently the centre is open for pre-booked fitness activi- ties Mondays, Wednesdays, Fri- days and Saturday afternoons, but said interest in the centre is going up and the centre will open for ad- ditional days when needed. So far, the centre appears to be a hit with the surrounding commu- nity. David and Jackie Stern took a tour of the facility on Tuesday, Oct. 6 and said they liked what they saw. "They've done a great job," said David. "There's a lot of open space, great facilities and natural light." Jackie said she's glad the space was used for a community centre following the closing of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. "It's nice to have something in downtown Oakville," she said. The centre has also been well re- ceived by the Trafalgar Chartwell Residents' Association (TCRA). "We think it's absolutely bril- liant, absolutely fantastic," said Carolyn McMinn, TCRA presi- dent. "It's what we've been missing in our little corner of the world." McMinn said she took a tour of the facility the day it opened and was struck by the multipurpose basketball courts, the gym equip- ment and the artwork at the facil- ity. "I can't wait to enrol my son in swimming lessons there. The pool looks fantastic," she said. "The other thing we can't wait to do is start having our monthly board meetings at this facility." McMinn said previously having her four children participate in recreation programs meant driv- ing to multiple locations across town. Now, she says many of her needs will be met right in her own community. "We're very impressed with it," she said. "Definitely worth the wait." McMinn said it took about 10 years for a community centre in southeast Oakville to get from an idea to reality. Construction of the community centre began in September 2018. The approved budget for the Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre was $39.7 million, which in- cludes $2 million for the park devel- opment.
