Stephen Lecce, the Ontario minister of ed- ucation, was in north Oakville on Nov. 12 to announce that the Ontario government will be providing $14.5 million for a new Catholic elementary school near the northeast side of Dundas and Trafalgar. The area has experi- enced rapid growth and the nearby Dr. David R. Williams Public School opened this year. "There are thousands of homes that will be built in the coming years. Tens of thou- sands of families will make this community proudly their home and they deserve to have quality schools," said Lecce at the currently empty site. Once completed, the school will host up to 671 students. Lecce said construction should be complete in two years. Since March of this year, the provincial government has invested more than $1 billion in capital funding for education projects. The North Oakville school is one of over 50 new schools approved across the province. Effie Triantafilopoulos, MPP Oakville North-Burlington, said there is a particular need for the new school. "In the last few years many new families have moved into Oakville and obviously they're coming to a community where there's land available in order to have homes built. Our community is probably the fastest grow- ing one in all of the Town of Oakville, and I dare say some of the other regions as well. We need the school, and we probably need more," said Triantafilopoulos. NEWS EDUCATION MINISTER ANNOUNCES $14.5M FOR NEW SCHOOL ROLAND CILLIERS rcilliers@metroland.com
